He is best known for his roles as Little Joe Cartwright in Bonanza (1959–1973), Charles Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie (1974–1983), and Jonathan Smith in Highway to Heaven (1984–1989).

Landon was born Eugene Maurice Orowitz in Forest Hills, New York, on October 31, 1936. He began his acting career in the early 1950s, appearing in several television shows and movies. In 1959, he was cast as Little Joe Cartwright in Bonanza, a Western drama that became one of the most popular shows on television. Landon remained with Bonanza for 14 seasons, and he won two Golden Globe Awards for his performance.
